Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic
"Monitoring the Impact of COVID-19 on Vocational and Higher Education"
In her letter to the House of Representatives, Minister van Engelshoven of the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science takes stock of the situation in vocational education and higher education. In it, she outlines the impact of COVID-19 on students, staff, and institutions in vocational education and higher education. In the letter, she cites the findings of our survey of more than 5,000 students, teachers, and staff members from 16 educational institutions. What conclusions does the minister draw from this?
A nuanced picture
Minister van Engelshoven informs the House of Representatives about the impact of COVID-19 on academic progress, the quality of education, and the well-being of students and faculty. In her letter, she highlights the positive aspects of remote education that students shared in the survey.
“Students at all the institutions surveyed report that they value the flexibility offered by distance education. For example, it allows them to take classes at times that are convenient for them, and the ability to rewind and pause videos is also viewed positively. In addition, 40% to 50% of students are (reasonably) satisfied with collaborating with other students remotely, and the lack of commute time is viewed as a positive.”
The disadvantages are also discussed:
“However, it is also noted that education from home leads to more distractions, such as from housemates and family. It is also noted that there are sometimes technical limitations and that it is more difficult to organize one’s work. Furthermore, it appears that some students actually have more contact with their instructors than before.”
Continue to monitor
Jasper Engelbert, research director at Turner: “It’s really great that we can help the minister in this way to present a nuanced picture of recent experiences—both the tough challenges and the potential.”
Alex Crezee, head of Turner’s education practice, adds: “It’s truly wonderful that we can make such a contribution. I also appreciate that the minister wants to stay on top of developments. We, too, are moving forward with a new round of the study and are expanding it to include more higher education institutions.”
