A multinational has globally integrated its autonomous operating companies into 'one operating company' per country.

Operating company

Breakthrough: This integration took place ten years ago, but is still known as a successful case in business management. A thorough preparation resulted in a seamless integration. Concrete results have been achieved. In the Netherlands: lower overhead costs (<8.7% of revenue), increased autonomy (50% reduction in senior management), larger span of control (10-12), simplified structure (15% reduction in management levels), and a platform for growth and sustainability. Unwanted customer and talent attrition (the number one issue in mergers and integrations) has been prevented.

Impact: The real breakthrough came from the balanced approach of both hard and soft aspects. The ‘day-1 kick-off,’ featuring a captivating video based on a popular pop song, presented a compelling story that made employees excited about the future. It truly resonated with them. However, just an ‘appealing video’ is not enough. Engaging in conversations with all teams about opportunities and responsibilities brought the integration to life. All employees saw the possibilities.
