Postponement of the Speed Skating Season for Team Turner
Team Turner's marathon skating season has been postponed. The first races of the season, which was scheduled to begin on October 26, have been canceled due to measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This is a setback for Team Turner.
Postponement of the Skating Season for Team Turner
On October 15, 2020, it was announced that the first marathon speed skating races of the 2020–2021 season had been canceled. This is because marathon speed skating is not recognized as a top-level sport by the NOC*NSF, and therefore no exception is being made to the measures aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19. Although the news did not come as a surprise to the skaters on Team Turner, it was still a hard blow.
"Take a moment to compose yourself"
Team Turner’s Lisa van der Geest says the following on schaatsen.nl: “The KNSB does treat marathon skating as a top-level sport, but it doesn’t have official status,” she notes. “Things had already been leaked before the press conference, and I thought right then that it was going to be difficult. The main idea behind the measures is to limit travel. So going to the ice rink together to skate a marathon doesn’t really fit with that. It doesn’t really come as a shock, but once it’s final, it’s still a bit of a blow.”
Turner’s managing partner, Jeroen Visscher, is also disappointed by the news: “Last season—our first season as a sponsor of this top speedskating team—we had a lot of fun with Team Turner. Watching the races together with our staff, business partners, and family members wasn’t just fun—it also gave everyone a great behind-the-scenes look. What does a top-level performance like that look like as a team? We’ll have to do without that for now. We’re keeping a close eye on all developments.”
Uncertain
The future of the marathon skating season remains uncertain. Stay updated via Team Turner’s Instagram account.
