Team Turner

Team Turner is expanding its coaching staff with three new elite sports professionals

Team Turner, the successful women’s marathon speed skating team in the Top Division, is strengthening its coaching staff with three elite sports professionals. Piet Hijlkema will design training programs for the skaters. Arjen Becker will serve as team leader on the ice. And former skater Michelle de Bruijn will become team manager. Zoey van den Bosch will continue in her role as physical therapist, as she has in previous years. With these professionalization efforts, the skaters will be able to focus even more effectively on their team performance in the coming season.

Piet Hijlkema

Workout Plans

Speed skater Merel Bosma, who stood out during the ’19/’20 season with some great podium finishes: “I’ve already been working with Piet Hijlkema this past season. He’s put together great training plans, which have allowed me to train to the best of my ability. I’m incredibly happy that he’ll now be working with the entire Team Turner on the training plans and organizing the training camps.”

Piet Hijlkema himself on this collaboration: “I’m really looking forward to working with this women’s team, in addition to my role as team manager for the Bouwselect men’s team. They can really make progress with personalized training plans based on their wattage, heart rate, and other data.”

Arjen Becker

New Team Manager

Arjen Becker is the successor to coach Jan-Martien van de Wetering and will lead Team Turner on the ice. Arjen: “I’ve been following Team Turner for a while now and have always thought they were a really great group. These girls are truly a team, and together we’re going to make sure we get the best out of ourselves. That’s important to me, too. I’m looking forward to working with them.”

Speed skater Dieuwertje van Kalken adds: “Arjen just became a father, so we had to work a little to convince him. It does take a lot to free up your schedule for the Saturdays and the weeks in Austria and Sweden. We’re so happy that he’s now said yes to us.”

Michelle De Bruijn

More guidance

Michelle de Bruijn, a well-known former marathon skater herself, will assist Team Turner with organizational matters: “I had just stepped down after six years as team manager at Nedflex. I’m actually very busy with my new company, Happy-atwork, and with my family. But when Lisa van der Geest and Iris van der Stelt asked me, I said yes. I’d love to help them; I also think it’s important that women’s marathon speed skating becomes even more professional.”

Patrick Eppink, who oversees sponsorship at the management consulting firm Turner: “As a sponsor, we’re also thrilled with these new additions to Team Turner. This team has so much potential; it’s important that they receive strong support. And it’s great to have Michelle as our point of contact, because next season we want to further strengthen the connection between Turner and Team Turner.”

Preparations for the ’20/’21 Season

Now that elite athletes have received the green light from NOC-NSF to train together again, the speed skaters on Team Turner are looking forward to the upcoming season. Merel: “It’s still a bit uncertain where we’ll be able to hold our summer training camp and whether the summer ice sessions at Thialf will go ahead. I’m hopeful that starting in October—as planned—we’ll be able to compete in our races, hopefully with spectators in attendance by then.”
