class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A Look Back at Hackathon 2024 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/barendlast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barend Last<\/a>, instructor and author.  <br><br>Imagine this: a room full of passionate educators spending three days diving deep into the question of how AI can improve education. Sounds like a recipe for innovation, right? Well, that\u2019s exactly what happened during the recent AI Hackathon organized by the University of Twente and the Dutch AI Coalition. I had the opportunity to lead an inspirational session there, which was a lot of fun.   <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-f0c63dd elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f0c63dd\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-08da622\" data-id=\"08da622\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-07c0208 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"07c0208\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>From manual labor to high-tech<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/strong><\/h3><p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span>After my presentation, I walked around and talked with various teams. There was a surprising moment when I was approached by two hands-on teachers who were at their wits\u2019 end. \u201cHow on earth can we incorporate AI into our classes, which are mainly about working with your hands and developing skills?\u201d they wondered in despair. The answer lies in a shift in thinking. By combining the power of AI with hands-on skills, we can even take hands-on crafts to a whole new level.    <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>Imagine starting a lesson by trying to create a painting with AI using a specific technique, and then actually creating the result yourself with a paintbrush. Or how about using AI to inspire unique design ideas for art projects, as a brainstorming partner in the creative process? Perhaps even AI-driven feedback on the ergonomics of movements during hands-on tasks. And from the teacher\u2019s perspective: evaluating the artworks created by the students. There are so many possibilities.    <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><h4>More Than Just a Game<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/h4><p>A hackathon is not only a powerful format for educational innovation, but also for teacher professional development. Instead of endless meetings about potential AI applications, participants are encouraged in a playful way to take immediate action. The result? Surprising solutions that are directly applicable to real-world situations.   <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>Take, for example, the winning team from the Royal Auris Group. Their tool, FABULA, uses just a few keywords to generate complete stories with matching illustrations, specifically designed for students with language learning difficulties. This team won because of the immediate practicality of their solution and its potential impact on special education. FABULA demonstrates how AI can be used to make education more inclusive and effective. You can read more about their solution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utwente.nl\/nieuws\/2024\/6\/1591868\/ai-hackathon-brengt-innovatie-in-onderwijs#meer-informatie\">here<\/a>.    <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><h4>The Other Side of the AI Coin<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/h4><p>But it\u2019s not always all sunshine and roses. In my presentation, I emphasized that there are also serious risks, particularly as they relate to the learning process. There are three risks that we, as teachers, need to pay explicit attention to:  <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><ol><li><b>Dependency: We <\/b>must prevent students from becoming so dependent on AI that they no longer develop essential skills on their own. Sometimes, outsourcing cognitive tasks to technology isn\u2019t such a bad thing. Think about how we used to memorize phone numbers, but now rely entirely on our smartphones. But in other cases, you undermine your own skills\u2014for example, when you rely too heavily on navigation systems, you compromise your natural sense of direction.   <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/li><\/ol><ol><li><b>Bias: AI systems <\/b>and algorithms are not neutral. They reflect the biases in the data used to train them and the way they are built (and by whom). We must remain critical of potential biases in AI systems and teach our students how to recognize and address them.  <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/li><\/ol><ol><li><b>Bullshit: AI <\/b>can sound convincing, even when it\u2019s factually incorrect. In fact, research even shows that AI now comes across as more reliable and empathetic than real people. But while it\u2019s designed to sound human, it isn\u2019t necessarily built to tell the truth. We must therefore teach ourselves and our students to always remain critical and to verify the output of AI systems.   <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/li><\/ol><h4>From Final Product to Learning Process<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/h4><p>In the presentation, I also touched on the challenge of authenticity and integrity. We need to reevaluate our assessment system. Our current paradigm, with its focus on final products and grades, often encourages the path of least resistance. And let\u2019s be honest: student behavior is simply a reflection of what we organize.   <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>By going back to the drawing board and using tools such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/leonfurze.com\/2023\/12\/18\/the-ai-assessment-scale-version-2\/comment-page-1\/\">AI Assessment Scale<\/a>, we can transform our assessment practices\u2014from snapshot evaluations to an integral part of every learning process, from start to finish. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><h4>AI in Education: The Practical Side<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/h4><p>The great thing is: we don\u2019t have to wait for the future. AI education projects are popping up all over the Netherlands. The Dutch AI Coalition recently <a href=\"https:\/\/nlaic.com\/onderwijs\/magazine-ai-in-onderwijs-leren-door-te-doen\/\">published an overview of inspiring projects<\/a>, and the National Education Lab AI also recently shared an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ru.nl\/nolai\/kennis-over-ai-in-onderwijs\/referentiekader\">overview of the current state of affairs<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barendlast.com\/edu-ai\">Edu-AI community on WhatsApp<\/a> has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aivoordocenten.com\/best-practices\">published a collection of videos showcasing successful applications<\/a>. These are wonderful use cases in which AI is being used responsibly.    <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>In conclusion<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>AI in education is not a question of \u201cif,\u201d but of \u201chow.\u201d It\u2019s not about blindly implementing every new tool, but about thoughtfully using AI as a means to achieve our educational goals. Whether it\u2019s grading tests, enriching lessons, or providing real-time feedback during presentations\u2014the possibilities are endless.  <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/p><p>So, let\u2019s experiment, learn, and above all: don\u2019t be afraid to fail. Because those failures often contain the seeds of the greatest breakthroughs.
