On Wednesday, June 14, as part of AI in Education Month, the event \u201cTeacher Professional Development at the Arnhem and Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences\u201d took place. What do teachers need to keep pace with current AI developments? Here is the report from that event.   <\/p><p><b><i>Of course, there are challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, but the rapid rise of ChatGPT and other platforms is forcing educational institutions to seriously consider how they will use this new technology. That is the main conclusion of the special AI Day held during NL Tech Week in Nijmegen. <\/i><\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6fdf53b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6fdf53b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The rapid rise of AI has not gone unnoticed by anyone in the education sector. When ChatGPT went live in late November 2022, savvy high school and college students immediately turned to the chatbot for help with their papers and other assignments. Inge Molenaar, director of NOLAI (National Education Lab for AI), who delivered the keynote speech during the education day of NL Tech Week in mid-June at Arnhem and Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences (HAN) in Nijmegen, was not surprised. She sees it as a pivotal event that forces us to reflect on the role of AI in Education. \u201cThe world has changed a little bit since December.\u201d Because what exactly is happening? What are students doing with ChatGPT, and what is their goal? And how should teachers and instructors respond? How, in turn, can they use AI in education?       <\/p><p>\u201cAI is actually quite different from the digital technology we\u2019ve been dealing with over the past twenty years,\u201d Molenaar said. \u201cDigital technology is supportive, while intelligent technology goes a step further and actually takes over tasks from us.\u201d \u201cCompare it to a self-driving car: it can actually take over the driving from the driver.\u201d That also poses an immediate danger, according to Molenaar. In Education, the goal is for students to continue learning on their own. \u201cThe learning process must be supported, not taken over.\u201d And of course, that also applies to teachers and instructors: they can use support, but they\u2019ll need to remain involved in the learning process. \u201cWe value the social role of teachers.\u201d     <\/p><p>That\u2019s not a given. There are already apps\u2014for learning a language, for example\u2014that no longer require a teacher. The software behind these apps can track the entire learning process and determine when a student needs support in certain areas. And how far should an AI system go in its supportive role? Molenaar showed a video about the use of AI applications in Chinese Education, where children\u2019s attention spans are monitored using a headband. This cannot happen without consequences. The NOLAI team sees it as its mission to identify the risks and capitalize on the opportunities that AI naturally offers as well. In education, we will not only have to offer education using AI and education about AI, but also take into account the possibility that AI could disrupt education.   <\/p><p>Some of the risks that stand out include a restriction of students\u2019 autonomy and freedom, privacy violations, a restriction of teachers\u2019 professional autonomy, and an impact on the pedagogical relationship between teachers and students. And, perhaps the greatest risk of all, is that educational institutions and teachers will lose control over the education process. However, if AI is used properly, it can also offer significant benefits, such as increasing digital literacy, boosting student motivation, and improving learning outcomes.  <\/p><p>By facilitating dialogue between Education, research, and entrepreneurs, NOLAI aims to help develop digital, intelligent educational innovations that will benefit both students and teachers. \u201cIn short, there\u2019s work to be done,\u201d said Molenaar. The institute believes it can develop new concepts in collaboration with the Education sector, the research community, and entrepreneurs\u2014concepts that will truly advance education. To achieve this, however, a well-developed step-by-step plan must be followed.   <\/p><ol><li>Defining the Question: What Do We Want to Achieve?<\/li><li>Prioritizing and Selection: Choosing the Most Promising Initiatives<\/li><li>Concept Development<\/li><li>Developing Prototypes<\/li><li>Validation in Practice<\/li><\/ol><p>Molenaar emphasizes the importance of five focus areas, which are crucial for Education in its approach to AI.<\/p><ol><li>Pedagogical and Didactic Principles<\/li><li>Teacher Professional Development<\/li><li>Technical AI in Education<\/li><li>Data and Infrastructure<\/li><li>Embedded Ethics<\/li><\/ol><p>Molenaar knows that these are also the issues educational institutions face in their day-to-day work. NOLAI has a number of \u201cteachers in residence\u201d in the Netherlands\u2014teachers who work at NOLAI one or two days a week but continue to teach the rest of the week, thereby strengthening the connection with the Education sector. <\/p><p>Based on NOLAI\u2019s experience to date, it has become clear that AI has a major impact on both the educational perspective and the behavioral perspective. And that calls for a very deliberate approach to its possibilities, according to Molenaars. <\/p><h4><strong>Predicting School Performance<\/strong><\/h4><p>The perspective outlined by Inge Molenaar was supported by two other presentations, one by Serge de Beer\u2014who has been a specialist in the use of audiovisual aids in Education for 25 years\u2014and the other by Pierre Gorissen, associate lecturer in learning with ICT at HAN University of Applied Sciences. For example, using a few relatively simple algorithms he developed himself, De Beer has succeeded in creating a tool that allows him to predict school grades with an accuracy of up to 0.2 points. Based on grades from a student\u2019s first year of high school, he can predict how that student will perform on a test in any subject during their third year. Setting aside the question of whether it\u2019s even permitted under privacy laws to enter anonymized student results into an American chatbot, this also raises questions about the entire school system: if it\u2019s so easy to determine learning outcomes, are tests even necessary anymore?   <\/p><p>What De Beer emphasized most to his audience, however, was that using AI yourself is much easier than many people think. \u201cIf you start using it yourself, you\u2019ll understand what AI is all about much better and get a handle on it. If you just buy AI tools from a vendor, it\u2019s still kind of a black box. And that\u2019s a much riskier situation.\u201d His call to action: get started tomorrow. <\/p><p>Gorissen issued a similar warning. \u201cAI is making its way into schools, so teachers need to learn how to deal with it. Certainly not just because of the fraud committed with it in the early stages, but because it raises the question of who is in the driver\u2019s seat in Education.\u201d In his view, educational institutions will need to focus on developing the necessary competencies to enable teachers to continue to act professionally and effectively. After all, it is still the teachers who must guide their students and pupils now that AI has become a reality.
