Conductor Bernard Haitink is a prime example of leadership. To Bernard Haitink, former conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Royal Opera House in London. Moved by a BBC documentary about his life, I\u2019d like to use this platform to reflect on who he is.  <\/p><p> <\/p><p>Haitink\u2019s secret is indefinable, but it has been immortalized in the many recordings and testimonies of his talent for conveying music to musicians and audiences. Through gestures, but perhaps even more so through his eyes, his face, and other nonverbal cues. He himself cannot define it, modest as he is, but when superlatives like \u201cmagic,\u201d \u201cmystery,\u201d \u201cfluid,\u201d and \u201cnatural\u201d roll off the tongues of those who have had the privilege of working with him at the peak of their abilities, we know we are in the presence of an unparalleled icon.  <\/p><p> <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f33710 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0f33710\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Freedom<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c3e6e90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c3e6e90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cEmbrace the orchestra without stifling it,\u201d says the conductor, now 92 years old, who subtly explains the difference between conducting and making music. Haitink is sensitive yet has an iron fist. He is both encouraging and strict with his orchestra. He\u2019s no control freak; he instills a sense of freedom and space. He has confidence in his musicians and makes that clear. He doesn\u2019t place himself above them or outside of them, but is part of the orchestra. His criticism is always respectful. These are qualities that many leaders would find difficult to emulate.       <\/p><p> <\/p><p>The foundation of his performance lies in mastering the score. Understanding the composer is key, yet it is only the beginning of the work. Rehearsing and building together with the orchestra. Connecting with one another. It\u2019s no longer about thinking, but about feeling. Unfolding the music. This is what makes the silences in the score special. Sensing where the other person is. At the moment when the distinction between \u201cdoes the orchestra follow the conductor\u201d or \u201cdoes the conductor follow the orchestra\u201d disappears, musicians and conductor surrender themselves completely to the essence. A \u201clove affair.\u201d For some, the most beautiful thing there is. For others, even peace.           <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b91096a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b91096a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">On the box<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-14d416b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"14d416b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Haitink has pursued this art form his entire life. And it didn\u2019t come easily. He didn\u2019t grow up with it, and as a young boy, he was mocked for it. Teachers didn\u2019t think he had any talent. And yet he did what he had to do. Speaking of his weaknesses\u2014such as shyness and pessimism\u2014he says, \u201cI fought my way through them.\u201d No hero. No ego. Until he\u2019s on stage\u2014then the music takes over.        <\/p><p>He\u2019s not one for long speeches; less is more. Taking his time. Being present. Drawing a long line and keeping going. Intense concentration and pacing himself along the way. With the end in sight. These are extraordinary qualities that make anyone with a love for music want to work with him.      <\/p><p>My standing ovation for the man who no longer wants to be in the driver&#8217;s seat. Magic. A great example of what matters at a time when our country is busy just trying to survive\u2014amid Brexit, the coronavirus, Trumpism, and a government that may be on the verge of collapse.
