Data-driven healthcare is lagging behind the acceleration in innovation that began during the COVID-19 crisis. This area received a score of 3 in Turner’s Healthcare Innovation Monitor. The management consulting firm surveyed dozens of healthcare executives, managers, and professionals about their findings, which are positive in many other areas.

According to the monitor, Health Intelligence is an innovation that failed to gain traction during the crisis. Attention was focused primarily on acute care for COVID-19 patients and the backlog that had built up in routine healthcare. Developing and implementing data-driven healthcare requires a long-term commitment and, as a result, did not get off the ground.

Passing grades

The score of 3 that this component received stands in stark contrast to other innovations that actually took off during the crisis. For example, the use of other communication channels, such as video consultations and WhatsApp, received a 9 in the Turner monitor. The only concern respondents raised in this area is privacy. The development of e-health, such as the use of new apps, also scored a 7—a solid passing grade.

Not Back to the Old Normal

Furthermore, the executives, managers, and healthcare professionals surveyed indicate that they expect the innovations that have been implemented to be permanent. They do not foresee a return to the “old normal” from a technical standpoint. However, they do fear a decline in collaboration and decision-making now that the peak of the crisis has passed.
