Curtains

What is ownership? When are you an owner? Owning it all, from recruitment to curtains. Peter de Bruin comes to realize this after choosing a different role. Beyond the “everything, all the time” mindset, there’s more time for real fun and added value.

"Curtains"

When I became a partner at Turner in 2000, I expressed the hope that nothing would change. I may have been primus inter pares, but above all, I wanted to keep working with the same group of clients and colleagues we had at the time. I wanted to continue with Continuous Development on the projects we were working on back then.

Our then-supervisor, Rob Schipper, listened to my speech with a heavy heart. That evening, during the celebratory dinner, he turned to me and said, “That was beautifully and sincerely spoken, but of course, from now on, nothing will ever be the same! Everything is different, because even the curtains are yours now!”

Ownership

I knew he was right; my wish was against my better judgment. From the moment you become the owner, “everything” is different. And it always will be. It’s actually kind of strange, because my professionalism, commitment, dedication, creativity, and eagerness to learn were already there. Clients and colleagues could already count on me—with heart and soul. Never a dull moment. Always ready and at the top of my game. The partnership didn’t change any of that. The difference literally lies in that “everything.” And always. In the all-encompassing nature of it all: from hiring the best people, the quality of delivery, the color of the logo, financial accountability, customer relationships, the joke with the cleaning staff, training up promising young talent, organizing team-building and networking events,…. , all the way to the quality of the coffee, the “advice and advisor” training, Digital Innovation, always—always—getting along with your colleagues, and, yes, the stain on the curtains. Nothing is unimportant anymore. It’s today and tomorrow, atmosphere and discipline, diversity and sustainability, quality and connection, relationships and substance,…, hard and soft, red and blue.

The Subject

I learned “red and blue” at Turner. And I taught it to the Turners. A formative duo full of love and strength. It was an honor. And I’m proud. Now, after 27 years, “the guy” is taking precedence over “the place.” As of 2021, I’m choosing my profession and stepping down as a partner. In a different role—as an independent management consultant—I’ll remain connected to Turner. I’m grateful and delighted that this is possible. After years of working with others on “comprehensive” projects, I can now focus on what I enjoy most: developing the plan, the team, and the capacity for growth through co-creation. I’m fully committed to my profession, serving as a guide, coach, supervisor, and advisor in Strategy Execution. A wonderful exercise in letting go. But above all, there’s joy in continuing to grow in freedom. Becoming even more of who I am. And adding value wherever I can—for example, through Multidisciplinary collaboration, adaptability, and community learning. How wonderful is the combination of AI and intuition?!

Without curtains

Now that I’m stepping down as owner, I find myself—once again, against my better judgment—hoping that nothing changes. I’m staying in this line of work, and I want to take it further. And I’d prefer to do that with the same group of customers and colleagues we have now. I’m handing in the curtains. In return, I’m reclaiming my freedom. Together with and for you!
