Digital Innovation in the Classroom
ROC Noorderpoort
- Experimentation in Education
- Innovation in Attendance Tracking
- Saving Class Time
Digital Innovation is high on the agendas of educational institutions. Yet very few concrete initiatives that directly impact students and teachers actually get off the ground. ROC Noorderpoort broke this pattern. Together with Turner and partners from the business community, we successfully applied digital technology to improve education in the classroom. How exactly did we help Noorderpoort?
Students are experimenting
We worked with about 70 students from Noorderpoort and partners in the field of ICT (StuComm, Be Sense, and VodafoneZiggo) to tackle a specific problem: Attendance tracking. In every class, five to seven minutes of valuable instructional time is spent taking attendance. We launched an experiment to automatically track attendance using beacons and sensors. We did this in short sprints, during which we familiarized ourselves with the beacon and sensor technology, conducted targeted analyses, and took concrete actions.
New Ways of Learning
Digital Innovation was a double-edged sword. Thanks to the experiment, it has become possible to gain 10% more instructional time. In addition, students have used technology in new ways to drive innovation. For example, Noorderpoort has developed a new approach to applied learning, which it will continue to implement next school year.
