What learning has vocational education gained from the COVID-19 pandemic?
Developments such as online education, adaptive learning, increased flexibility, and personalization have been on the agendas of educational institutions for some time. Starting in March, these developments gained momentum when schools were forced to switch to 100% online instruction.
Survey of more than 5,000 students, faculty, and staff
Fourteen vocational schools, in collaboration with HAS, Radboud University, and Turner, conducted a survey of more than 5,000 teachers, students, and staff members to draw lessons from the COVID-19 period from March through July. The goal was to answer the question on every educational institution’s mind: What can we learn together from this unique period in education?

100% online doesn't work
In the spring of 2020, vocational education institutions rapidly organized online education. Teachers and staff went above and beyond to make this possible. It surely comes as no surprise that 100% online education isn’t ideal. Students and teachers greatly miss spontaneous and face-to-face interaction. We’re seeing very individual and personal preferences and experiences with online learning formats. And it’s not over yet—these times remain very challenging and place high demands on students, teachers, and staff.
No Going Back to the Way Things Were
Still, we cannot ignore the positive experiences with online education. Indeed, some forms of education, assessment, and testing work very well online and offer clear benefits for students and instructors. With this study, we are uncovering the first points of reference for this.
