Silver and Bronze for the Turner Speed Skating Team at the Grand Prix Final in Luleå

The Grand Prix Final in marathon skating took place on Saturday, February 28, on the frozen Gulf of Bothnia in Luleå, just below the Arctic Circle. The 100-kilometer race marked the end of a week that had already seen two races held in temperatures of -19°C, with drizzle and fog.

The Turner speed skating team won silver and bronze. Judith Krabbenborg finished second, and Manon Gremmen finished third.

Sophisticated Interplay

The podium finish was the result of tactical teamwork. Judith and Manon were part of the six-rider breakaway, thanks in part to the efforts of their teammates Eline Cox and Iza Stekelenburg. Once the breakaway was established, Judith and Manon took turns attacking. “We decided to take turns breaking away to split up the group. It worked,” said Judith.

Judith rode off with Veerle van Koppen, who would go on to win. Manon kept the chasers in check. “I saw Judith and Van Koppen pull away and immediately thought: that’s a podium finish at the very least,” Manon says. “All I had to do after that was stay on those girls’ heels.”

A long-cherished wish

For both skaters, it was their first podium finish on natural ice. “We really, really wanted to stand on that podium on natural ice, after having come up short so many times before,” says Judith. “Natural ice is what we focus on most, summer and winter. That’s what marathon skating means to me. So this is a wonderful reward for all the hard work.”

A Strong Week

The team had already made its mark earlier that week. After two strong races in which a podium finish was always within reach, Turner was in third place in the team standings. “Gave it my all. What a grueling race. So beautiful and so close,” Eline Cox texted after the second race. Saturday brought the crowning moment.

This season, the Turner Speed Skating Team consists of: Eline Cox, Manon Gremmen, Judith Krabbenborg, Iza Stekelenburg, and Janet Beers. They combine elite sports with careers in the (bio)medical sector, thereby demonstrating that elite sports and professional careers can reinforce one another. The team management and support staff consists of Bouke Gerritsma, Sharon Hendriks, Floor Besteman, and Willem van der Steen.
