A Look Back at Artificial Intelligence in Education

Turner aims to provide its clients with timely, fresh, and relevant insights into their markets and the strategy execution and innovation challenges they face. That is why it is organizing a series of masterclasses for the Education sector: “Making Sense of AI in Education.” This is a brief summary of the first session, organized and facilitated by Turner Strategy Execution and Beenova AI.

In collaboration with Beenova AI, Turner organized the masterclass: “Making Sense of AI in Education.” The very first in a series took place in February. How can you use AI to accelerate your Strategy Execution? How can you implement AI effectively at your educational institution? And how do you develop a step-by-step plan for using AI in your own organization? AI expert and keynote speaker Jos Dirkx and innovation expert Gerdinand Bosch from Turner shed light on the opportunities and challenges that AI brings.

Master Class: Making Sense of AI in Education

AI ENHANCES COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE

The use of AI— artificial intelligence—offers unprecedented potential, but also presents us with major challenges. The technology is still in its infancy and is evolving so rapidly that Jos Dirkx has made it a habit to double-check her slides the night before a presentation to see if they need updating. Dirkx, a global keynote speaker on AI, CEO of an AI startup, and member of the Singularity University Faculty, outlined the journey of AI—from its early days to China’s leading role in the current technological revolution. She also discussed the challenges that exponential growth presents, including in Education. Although AI can surpass us in many areas, Dirkx emphasized that it is primarily a tool to help us maximize our own potential. At the same time, she acknowledged the barriers we must overcome: problems with sharing data and knowledge, the time and energy required, and the fear of losing jobs. A lot is changing. Yet, according to Dirkx, there is really only one possible strategy:“Use what is out there. We must use AI to enhance collective intelligence.’

HOW DO YOU INNOVATE WITH AI?

“AI should be a ‘big ticket ’ for your organization,” Bosch tells us. And by that, he doesn’t mean a major client or order, but rather a key topic in your change portfolio. “This is so important that we simply must make time for it.” Bosch elaborates on this by posing reflective questions regarding how to embed AI in your strategy, how to execute it, and the role the ecosystem should play in this process. After all, collaboration is indispensable for success in this area. Bosch illustrates his point with current examples from case studies at Breda University of Applied Sciences, Koning Willem I College, and the Dutch Education Lab for AI.”

During the breakout session, representatives from these organizations participated and shared their experiences.

WHAT STEPS ARE YOU TAKING TO ADVANCE AI IN YOUR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION?

  1. Develop your own narrative as the foundation for your strategy, so that your people understand what is expected of them.
  2. Include your AI plans in the strategic change portfolio.
  3. Think about scalability; experimenting is fun, but we want results on a larger scale.
  4. Think carefully about how you use your ecosystem.
