Team Turner - Message from Team Manager Arjan Becker
“With the nice weather we’ve been having lately, speed skating isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Still, Team Turner has already been training for two months in preparation for the upcoming skating season. With three new skaters (Evi Gelling, Lisanne Buurman, and Tjilde Bennis) and regular team member Dieuwertje van Kalken, we’re now laying the groundwork for what we hope will be a great natural-ice winter. The first few days of training with the team were mainly spent getting to know each other better. They’ve already completed training camps in the dunes of Schoorl and the hills of South Limburg. The girls also train together regularly following the programs designed by coach Piet Hijlkema. For me, as team manager, it’s wonderful to see that everyone on this new team has a specific strength that we’ll really enjoy this coming winter. Dieuwertje showed last season that she can truly compete for the top spots; she has a rock-solid finishing kick in her legs. Tjilde is tireless and loves to choose the offensive approach. Lisanne is very skilled on skates and tactically strong; she knows how to make the right decisions in the heat of the battle. Evi is a diamond in the rough who has the potential to shine on both artificial and natural ice. For now, we’re well on our way to lining up as a balanced team at the start of the first race in October. As part of our preparations, the Tour de Turner has, of course, been included in the training schedule again, giving everyone a chance to meet Team Turner’s new additions.
